About Lake St. Martin First Nation

Lake St. Martin First Nation is an Anishinaabe community in Manitoba's Interlake region whose people have lived on the shores of Lake St. Martin for many generations.

Lake St. Martin First Nation, known in Anishinaabemowin as Obashkodeyaang (spelled Obushkudayang by the Treaty 2 government), is an Anishinaabe community in the Interlake region of Manitoba. The people have lived on the shores of Lake St. Martin for many generations. Traditionally they were mainly fishers and buffalo hunters, and they also hunted other game and farmed.

The Nation signed Treaty 2 and is part of the Interlake Reserves Tribal Council. It is also listed under the Government of Anishinaabe Nation in Treaty 2 Territory. Its reserves are:

  • The Narrows 49
  • The Narrows 49A

In May 2011, during a major flood, the Province of Manitoba diverted water into Lake St. Martin to protect cottages and farmland elsewhere, and every home in the First Nation was destroyed. Against the community's wishes, the province chose a nearby former Cold War radar base as a temporary site. In 2018, Chief and Council handed out keys to new homes so members could begin returning, but about 1,000 evacuees were still displaced in 2019.

You can find more information on the Nation's official website.
